Two years after President Lincoln's announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, and months after the end of the American Civil War, Major General Gordon Granger entered Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, informing 250,000 enslaved Africans of their freedom.  Join Prof. Andrew Sekou Jackson for his historical coverage of this newly established National Holiday.
