Program Description

Event Details

As the fishing industry decimated the whale population world wide, a new resource was discovered to replace whale oil, a fish known as menhaden. Locally called bunker, the mass harvesting of the fish supported a number of industries for decades, until it came to a halt in the 1960s. Join Southold Town Historian Amy Kasuga Folk in a look at the last days of the bunker fishing industry on the East End of Long Island.
